MYTH: The screenshot below shows the total amount of Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) and/or American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) a return is eligible to claim (i.e. the actual calculation of the education credit).

MYTH BUSTED: The screenshot (and intent of the “We Recommend…” page) shows how each eligible education credit will impact the amount owed or refund due as indicated in the highlighted text below. In many cases, the total calculated education credit amount and the impact the education credit will have on the balance owed/refund due is the same, however, that is not always the case. The “We Recommend…” page is designed to only show how much a balance owed will decrease or how much a refund will increase.

Update 10/07:  VITA/TCE support is back to regular support hours via telephone, chat and email.  We want to take a moment to thank all of you for your patience and support through these unusual circumstances.  August and the surrounding CSRA areas still have a long road to recovery.  The majority of all employees finally  have power restored, but it is now time to really assess the physical property damages and determine the best course of action to rebuild.  #Augustastrong

Update 10/02:  VITA/TCE support will have limited support via email only for the remainder of the week as many of our employees still remain without power.

Update 9/29:  VITA/TCE support will continue to remain closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene.  The majority of the Augusta area is without power and water.  We will re-evaluate the situation on Tuesday and update the blog accordingly.  Please be patient while we allow our TaxSlayer team focus on the safety and well-being of their families.

Note:  This does not impact the ability to use TaxSlayer Pro Online, as our data centers are not housed in the Augusta/CSRA area.

Update:  The path of Hurricane Helene took a path closer to our area than we anticipated.  Due to power outages and the dangerous weather conditions, we are closing VITA/TCE support for today:  Friday, September 27th.  We will resume normal VITA/TCE hours on Monday, September 30th.

Due to expected Severe Weather in the Southeast over the next couple of days, TaxSlayer support availability may be impacted. At this time, normal off-season support hours are expected but this could change. This blog post will be updated with the latest updates as they are available.

NOTE: The below changes DO NOT impact volunteer access to Link & Learn training materials. For any questions related to Link & Learn, please direct them to your local SPEC Relationship Manager and not to TaxSlayer VITA/TCE support. We are unable to assist or answer any Link & Learn questions.

Background: Link & Learn Certification Site (VITA/TCE Central) is Offline

Message for SPEC Employees:

The Link & Learn Taxes (LLT) certification site is offline due to a transition to a new vendor for LLT maintenance. The transition period is expected to last several months. During this period, the LLT certification site will remain offline. An update will be provided as new information becomes available.

Impact on Services:

During this period, the LLT certification site will be unavailable.  Volunteers will not be able to access the certification site to take certification tests. If a partner has an immediate need to certify volunteers, please contact their local relationship manager. In reference to Continuing Education Credits, we hope to have certificates available in LLT sometime after July 2024.

Action for SPEC Employees:

All SPEC employees should review the alert and share it with your partners and volunteers. Once new information is available, we will notify you promptly.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience and continued support.
